Cloud Computing

WHAT IS 'THE CLOUD'?

Virtually everyone in a New Zealand organisation has at least heard (if not understood) the term 'The Cloud'. There are many definitions and sub-definitions of Cloud Computing which can make 'getting it' tricky.

“Cloud computing is a online form of computing (Web 2.0 in fact) where users can access applications via a browser, while the application is installed and stored (as well as the data) on a server. This is a whole new form of computing and is allowing thousands of users from all around the world to access something without having to download and install anything on their own computers. An example of this would be Google Docs.” (WebReporting.com)

Very broadly speaking, Cloud Computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product - it is the way the world has, and increasingly continues to manage the massive and exponentially growing explosion of modern information.  Cloud Computing is the means through which everything (from computing power to business processes to personal collaboration) is delivered to you as a service wherever and whenever you need it.

One of the key indicators of a 'Cloud' service is that the technology is abstracted away from the user. The key responsibility for the I.T. assets and their maintenance is shifted to the Cloud services provider. This way - you can focus on the value received from the Cloud rather than how it works.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT CLOUD COMPUTING?

The global Cloud Computing market  is already massive and is going to get a whole lot bigger.  Leading global Analysts provide different growth estimates, yet all agree that the market for public cloud infrastructure, platforms and applications is huge and growing far more quickly than any other type of IT spending.

Cloud Computing fills a relentless need of I.T. in all organisations. It enables you to increase capacity or add capabilities 'on the fly' without you needing to invest in new infrastructure, train new staff or license new software.

There are multitudes of reasons for New Zealand organisations to adopt Cloud solutions.
